Flocking Together I: Grackles and Cowbirds

There are several nests of cicada-killing wasps in our backyard. A wasp runs into the kitchen window with a "thunk" sound several times a day. They may be the reason that between three and seven grackles often land in the yard in the mornings. Not infrequently they are accompanied by a round brown bird, which stands about amid the sleek black grackles. Looking through the binoculars and thumbing through the bird book I decided it was a cowbird. Another bird book on our shelf says grackles and cowbirds sometimes flock together. Who knew?

Glad to see someone else is also paying attention to the birds. With all the talk about the environment, fewer people know much about nature.
