PA in the WSJ

This is a list of articles regarding Pennsylvania in this week's Wall Street Journal. Chances are I missed something, but these are the articles that caught my eye.

It should be noted that I routinely do not read the editorials in the WSJ. So any discussions of the state, its elected officials, businesses, or citizens, in editorials will not be mentioned here.

This week may be sketchier than usual. We were without electricity for about 3 hours and I read some of the papers by candlelight.

PA Politicians

This category is going to get very crowded over the next few weeks.

The governor gets quoted (you know, THAT quote) in “Race may be playing role for working-class voters,” by Jonathan Kaufman (3/06).

Almost every federally elected Democratic official (plus Ed Rendell and a few mayors) in the state gets mentioned in “Clinton looks tough to beat in Pennsylvania, the next big primary,” by Nick Timiraos (3/06)

“Clinton, Obama camps prepare for a long sky,” by Nick Timiraos and Amy Chozick (3/05) and “Democrats pound on economy,” by Amy Chozick and Sara Murray (3/08) both discuss the Pennsylvania primary but not Pennsylvania politicians.

PA Businesses

Pittsburgh-based Heinz, Inc. plays a role in “Retracing the beef-supply trail,” by Julie Jargon (3/04)

From “KB, Toll Brothers set CEO bonuses amid gloom,” by Michael Corkery (3/07):

The boards of Toll Brothers, Inc., and KB Home are finding ways to grant sizable bonuses to their chief executives, even as the home builders’ share prices and profits languish.

The compensation committee at Toll Brothers is proposing to replace a bonus plan that was tied partly to shareholder equity and income. Under that plan, CEO and co-founder Robert Toll didn’t receive a bonus last year for the first time since 1991. Under the new bonus plan, Mr. Toll could get an amount based partly on the company’s income and also on whether Mr. Toll meets a “varied,” but undisclosed, set of criteria determined by a compensation committee.

In 2006 Mr. Toll received a $17.5 million bonus and a $27.3 million bonus in 2005.

Alcoa is mentioned in “Alcoa weighs on Dow industrials,” by Anjali Cordiero (3/08)

Passing mentions:
Rodale, Inc. of Emmaus (3/04)
PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. of Pittsburgh (3/07)

Other PA

Penn professor Dennis Culhane is a lead researcher in the study of housing the homeless and is quoted in “Homeless study looks at ‘housing first’,” by Joe Barrett (3/06)

A Pittsburgh resident is mentioned and quoted in “More people pushed into part-time work force,” by Kris Maher (3/08)

Other Interesting Tidbits

Those interested in the estate tax might enjoy “There’s the rich, and there’s the ‘Fortunate 400’,” by Tom Herman (3/05).

Another interesting article is “Stock gifts that give back,” by James Bandler and Mark Maremont (3/05)

Potential good news for those of us concerned about the fate of newspapers: “U.K. publishers are buried story,” by Aaron O. Patrick (3/07)
